ABOUT
The Short Version: Your Hot Press Mini Blurb. (You know when you interview me…or write about me or think about me)
Jennifer Lake is a multi-talented mission led creative. She has a background in Improv from the Groundlings and Stand up comedy from Improv Boston. She has pitched her feature comedy screenplay to industry executives through Stage 32 with a 33.33% success rate for requests. Her debut short film Kevin and His Sword, the untold story of the last hero premiered at the Music Hall Lounge as an official selection in the 2022 New Hampshire Film Festival.
Whether it’s on the screen, stage or page her aim is to help audiences connect to what matters most.
The Medium Version:
Jennifer Lake has been a real adult human woman for over four decades on planet earth. Give or take a few years. Collectively amidst two failed social media channels more than one view and less than 100,000 views. However this doesn’t mean anything about her talent because if you watch even one of those videos and you have a pulse and sense of humor you might find you start to chuckle just a bit or a lot. She is immediately firing her non-existent social media team. She has performed at more than 5 and less than 100 open mics no one has heard about to rave reviews with a few questionable responses. One man commented, “You should do more jokes about your hair, because it’s so pretty.” While she thanked the man for his unsolicited advice because she is a woman and that is what polite society has ingrained in her, she really wanted to tell him with the kind authority of a mildly disappointed mother “No thank you, please go stare at the wall now.” She absolutely LOVES to; write, sing, dance, spend time in nature and laugh with her kiddo.
Her aim is to help audiences connect to what matters most whether it be on the screen stage or page.
The LONG informal version no one asked for.
What I have done:
Way back in 2005/2006 I was an extra in numerous Film and T.V spots and LOVED it.
Notably, I have been recognized for my spot on Medium as “Juror # 12”. Ah yes, staring off into space looking absolutely disgusted and unapproachably pissed off at everyone is a true skill of mine. I worked on any set I could get onto as a production assistant or extra and talked to as many people as I could. While there is no way to prove this, all I have is my failing memory, Ted Raimi, (Sam Raimi’s brother) or at least that is what he said his name was, asked me for my headshot and resume while on set filming a feature that I was an extra on. Sadly, I was in my 20’s and not all that smart. I didn’t understand the opportunity here, and I told him I didn’t have one. I think about him every day. Ted….call me.
When I was 26 years old I ended up single, unemployed and pregnant (Don’t worry I will reveal all of the details in my book). I moved back east 7 months pregnant to raise my daughter. When my daughter was a baby the idea to write my musical struck me. While raising my daughter by myself, alone… I became certified as a yoga teacher and personal trainer, wrote my musical, ran up mount Washington, almost died in a car accident, stayed in recovery from drug and alcoholism, kept writing the musical, wrote three screenplays, wrote a young adult novel, healed from trauma, started my own personal training business, produced a yoga dvd, produced and hosted an interview series on mindset, moved multiple times, took classes and advanced at the Groundlings online during covid, trained in stand up comedy at Improv Boston, pitched my screenplay to industry executives with a 33.3 % success rate for requests, queried multiple publishers for my book with one request, performed at open mics for comedy despite crippling anxiety and fear, wrote, produced and directed my first short film, produced a workshop read through of my musical and stayed alive and healthy during a pandemic while also raising a confident, brilliant, grounded, intelligent, adventurous human (now sixteen).
The most important thing I did? Learned how to love and be loved. (still an ongoing process)
Where I aim to be: (A.K.A my WHY)
Creating the projects that come to me through divine inspiration, loving, living, laughing and connecting every day no matter what.
I have always been fascinated by thoughts, habits, and actions, the process of change and the power or creation. I have a daily prayer, meditation and affirmation practice that has evolved over the years and helps me to be present to the day while creating and achieving the goals I desire to. It’s a practice and a process. And I have NOTHING figured out.
A quote I have heard multiple times through different Yoga teachers and Naturopathic doctors, that I have not been able to trace the origins of, goes somewhat like this: The human brain has an average of 60,000 thoughts per day. 60,000. Thoughts. For every ONE NEGATIVE thought (vibration, which emits a frequency) it takes THREE POSITIVE thoughts (vibration, which emits a frequency) to NEUTRALIZE the negative. Just to get to NEUTRAL you need THREE POSITIVES. I don’t know the origin of this study, how it was conducted nor how the conclusions were drawn, but it does posit some very interesting ideas around the POWER of our MINDS and the INVERSE nature of our environment that we currently exist in. I work really hard on a daily basis to keep my mind free and open as a channel to my creative potential.
Now, what does any of that have to do with entertainment?
In an overly simplified version of the great quote from RUMI- You are what you think, say and do. That means how you nourish your mind matters. What type of information you take in on the screen, stage or page matters.
When you are watching T.V or a Movie it puts your mind in the Theta state. A state of consciousness that gives access to your subconscious and can be influenced with positive or negative thoughts. Think of your subconscious as the hard drive, your default programming that stays fixed unless consciously worked on with re-designing. Theta brain wave state is the same state of consciousness that your brain goes into when in the hypnosis state. A.K.A T.V PROGRAMMING puts the mind in a subconscious state where-in whether or not you know it, the emotional, energetic frequency emitted from the screen is having an impact your brain. Thus impacting your thoughts, and thus impacting your life. This of course is a huge topic that requires more space and time…however important to share the cliff’s notes as it is a huge part of my WHY in what I create.
Why are we glorifying violence on the screen? Why are we glorifying unrealistic romantic love stories, you know the ones where a one dimensional female has everything she needs in life with her career and friends except for she is broken and lost without MR right, and he saves her from a life of too many cats and loneliness?
I don’t think it’s realistic to completely eradicate all entertainment in the world. I do think it is our responsibility as adults and humans to be conscious of the impacts of what certain types of entertainment are doing to our population. It’s all connected.
My part in this is that I aim to create uplifting high value highly consicous entertainment that creates levity and joy. Laughter has medicinal benefits.
The time we have on earth is a GIFT.
Art has the power to change the world. My intention with all of my work is to create levity amidst the darkness and hopefully spark a thread of light, bit of laughter or deeper connection to what matters most.
My former life’s about and professional credentials should you be curious about that.
Jennifer Lake files her taxes as single, never married, head of household. It is a privilege and distinguished honor few get to experience. While she doesn’t take this title lightly, she knows how to throw down handstands on the tops of mountains, sidewalks or busy metropolitan areas without care about who is watching, just for the love of it (of course pictures are always taken). When asked what her best kept secret is at being so remarkably awesome at everything, she will tell you “I can’t say, because it is a secret”.
However she can allude and does repeat ad nauseum how powerful prayer, meditation, movement and green smoothies are at helping to ease the rumblings of an untamed beast that lives in her mind and the roar of an undying hunger that craves worldwide domination and will stop at nothing except to eat snacks every two to three hours. It’s really a form of service to humanity as she gets HANGRY- her daughter can attest to this truth. She pushes the edge of what is possible and moves past perceived limitations with the acuity of an all-wheel drive 2016 Audi.
Many have tried to match her level of Zen in the world of training and unique skill for terrible counting. Just for future reference, when she says you only have “one more” it truly, actually means most likely you have at least 10 more reps or seconds on the clock. But as you will find out, should you be so lucky to work with her, this will be to your benefit and you will gladly accept the challenge. Her aim is for you to understand the true meaning of her self-proclaimed quote that will be published someday on a Barnes and Nobles book shelf you will pass by, so best to read it now while the wisdom is hot: “The Journey is the destination”
According to one friend, “Her vivacious sense of humor is unmatched by any other” Other people have said “Really that’s the best you can do? My seven -year- old nephew Ken can do better than that.”
